Born in Maynardsville Tennessee, Smith was quite popular in the 50's and 60's, and in his career was able to place 93 tunes on the Billboard Top Country Singles Chart.
He was married for a short time to June Carter and is the biological father of Carlene Carter. His second wife, Goldie Hill also enjoyed some chart success.
In the early 1950's Carl joined the Grand Ole Opry and got a recording contract with Columbia. He stayed with that label for 24 years and sold over 15 million records.
Carl took a shot at acting and appeared in two westerns, "The Badge of Marshal Brennan" and "Buffalo Gun", and between 1964 and 1969, he hosted nearly 200 episodes of "Carl Smith's Country Music Hall" on Canadian television.
He retired in 1978 and bred horses, and was inducted into the Country Music hall of fame in 2003.
